Podcast Episode #5 – Apple Updates, The Linux Action Show, Mysterious Universe and More!

The fifth episode of The Worthless Genius Podcast is here!

Today I talk about 3 news items, a couple of Worthless Genius topics, and I ask for the help of the online community.

Here’s some links to what I talk about:

News:

Worthless Genius Stuff:

And also, if anyone out there has some ideas for a library organization system that is:

  • Free
  • Open Source (so that I can monkey around with the internals)
  • Easy to Use

Let me know here in the comments, so that I can go check it out.

Podcast Episode #4 – Linux, Linux, Linux!

In today’s episode, I discuss Linux.  I also touch on the polarization of the Linux community on the topic of embracing closed-source, proprietary software, and why it would be a good thing for the community as a whole.

Here are some links to what I talked about today:

This episode marks the first episode recorded in GarageBand, so you should see a drastic improvement in the audio quality.  As always, send me some feedback, and let me know what you think, ways that I can improve, or if you think I should start putting music back into the episodes.

Worthless Genius Podcast Episode #4 is Coming…

It’s been way too long since Episode 3 was released, but I am working on a new work flow that will allow me to get the recording done faster, and be a lot clearer.

I had been using my desktop PC and Audacity to record, but there was a lot of high-pitched squealing, and the microphone input was not very loud.

Well, I’ve switched to GarageBand now, and boy is there a major difference.  Even on the modest White Macbook, the recording quality is stellar.  Surely not perfect, but certainly much better.

So, Episode #4 is coming, be patient.  If all goes according to plan, this will actually end up being the longest episode yet.  Stay tuned!

Podcast Episode #3 – News and The Appalachian Independent

I had originally planned on re-recording this, but time dictated me no grace. A more well-rounded episode will be available for next week.

Episode 3 of the Worthless Genius Podcast brings us back to the format that premiered in Episode 2. We have two short news article discussions, and a Site to See. Classes start today for me, so this week’s release schedule may be a little tight. I would like to get into a 10 minute show every Monday, Wednesday and Friday if possible, but we’ll see what time is like. Here’s what we covered today:

Podcast Episode #3 Delayed

I had planned on releasing the third episode of the Worthless Genius Podcast today, but have decided to wait a few days.

This is partially due to my school schedule, but also mostly due to one of the news stories growing immensely in the time since I recorded the episode on Thursday.

I will be revisiting that news story, plus adding a few more things in, to make for a longer episode. One of the great things about podcasting is the ability to set my own schedule, so I don’t think the M-W-F release of a 10 minute episode each week will be working.

The plan is to put out something about 30 minutes or so once a week. The third episode is now scheduled for Wednesday morning (or midnight Tuesday, however you look at it) January 21st 2009.

At this point, the show consists of myself talking and a bit of music thrown in to break the monotony. I would like to get some Skype calls in with some developers I know, and maybe some other notable people in the future.

Thanks to all those who have tuned in, and I hope that I can make the experience a bit better for all of the listeners in the future.

Notice over to the right, you can now subscribe to the podcast feed through the site, which will bring you these posts as well as the mp3s into your feed reader. Also, Worthless Genius is now available in the iTunes store, so use the iTunes link on the right hand side to subscribe directly in iTunes.

As always, feel free to discuss this here in the comments. You can also email me suggestions or comments at worthlessgenius [at] gmail.com, or hit me up on Twitter, @stroz. Also, check out my FriendFeed, with username strozykowski.

Podcast Episode #2 – News, Software, and TwitterBump

This episode of the Worthless Genius podcast is a change of pace, in an attempt to get the podcast into a format that can hold up week to week. As the first episode was simply a review, this one has more opinion, and more awesome.

New Software
This episode I touch on some new software that I bought recently. I excitedly talk about how I’ll actually be getting a box for a new suite of software.

So, as discussed, I’ll be receiving the Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium.

Also, I discuss going back to school, and what classes I have to look forward to.

News
In the news section, I discuss:

Site Highlight
In the first ever site highlight, I give a tip about a new service called TwitterBump.

Podcast Episode #1 – Windows 7 Beta 1 Review

Windows 7 Beta 1 Review

I’ve never done any kind of audio recording or editing that would be publicly heard, so bear with me on this first episode of the podcast.

I’d like to take the podcast and make it a piece of audio every week that discusses some topic that has come up for me in my every day life as a geek. I haven’t planned a roadmap for this, so I’m not quite sure where it’s going to go, or even if it’s going to go.

I’ve been thinking of doing some sort of podcast for a long time now, mostly inspired by podcasts like The Linux Action Show. I don’t have any kind of fancy equipment, just a gaming headset and a version of Audacity to record my stuff. So expect a non-top-notch show, and if time goes on and things get better, maybe I can learn some new stuff and really advance my place in the audio world.

I am recording this with the onboard soundcard, as I don’t think I have a soundcard laying around that I could use for more serious recording. You might here a bit of high-pitched noise, and that’s most likely to do with the way that onboard soundcards work.

In addition to this audio review, which was recorded just about 24 hours after I installed Windows 7 Beta 1, I plan on doing a new post in about a week with my thoughts after using it in regular situations.

All this being said, I hope you like what I have to say, and I promise I’ll do better next time. Use the widget below to listen to it streaming in your browser:
