Office Cleanup – For Real This Time

About a year ago, I posted an article about how I was going to clean up my office surroundings.  This went completely into hibernation, and nothing was ever done to complete this monumental task.

That is, until yesterday.  Check out the before and after photos below.

The Fear of Using Windows – Part 2: Cost of Ownership

This is Part 2 of “The Fear of Using Windows.” Please read Part 1 if you have not already.

There is a lot more to owning and maintaining a PC than just picking one up from the store and plugging it into the wall. I think the overall lifetime cost of a PC should be considered when purchasing new hardware. Continue reading

The Fear of Using Windows – Part 1: The Three Types of PC Users

I’ve harped heavily here before about how Windows doesn’t work well for people who are just starting out with computers. I’d like to go into a bit more detail about thoughts I’ve had recently and give a little background to what I’m talking about.

Entertainment: Games – Doom 3

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a HUGE fan of the Doom series of games. When I was in high school, id Software announced Doom 3. My friends and I were big Doomers, even hijacking the school network to play Doom during “activity period”, and were extremely excited about the prospect of facing even more hordes of demons, but this time with realistic 3d graphics. (“Does it blink?” one of my friends asked about the marine 3d model.)

Fast forward 6 years, and here I am finally playing through the game that I had anticipated with such ferver. I had come across the game sometime in 2004, but was unable to devote time to try to get through it.

A few months ago, I picked up the id Software Super Pack on Steam. Paying only $69.99 for copies of the classic games I grew up with seemed like a great deal. After all, this long period of time has seen many destroyed original CDs and degaussed floppy disks. Though I did play through Quake once more, the reason I bought the pack was to play Doom 3.

I had gone into the game with all of the good and bad reviews in mind, so I’m not so sure I wasn’t ready to be disappointed. The classic complaint is the amount of darkness in the game:

After all of these years, I finally have a rig that can handle this game, so what better time to try it out? I was able to put everything up on high, with a fairly high resolution, and the gameplay was smooth.

So, I started this game all pumped up and ready for some action. Loading up the first level, I found that it really was dark. Little did I know that this was the entrance, before the s hits the f, and it was going to get a lot darker.

I’ve played through about 3.5 hours of the game, and I really feel like I don’t want to finish it. So many quiet periods, followed by a demon spawning out of nowhere behind you, and really at predictable moments. In fact, I got good at avoiding the situations altogether.

Though the story is alright, I really can’t get past the flaws in gameplay. Doom 3, in my opinion, is certainly no Half Life 2. I sincerely hope that id can bring back the fun of the original games with their recently announced Doom 4.

From a fan of the original, I can’t force myself to sit through the bastard child that is Doom 3. If you ask me, it was more of a tech demo, which should have not carried the Doom name. I will be sticking with my favorite original Doom ports, and will be awaiting Doom 4.
