A Necessary Evil

Once again, it is that time.  That time where I wait in line at the Wal-Mart pharmacy, only to find out that the prescription is not ready.

I’m not going to blame the Wal-Mart employees themselves, on the contrary, they work in an extremely flawed system.  There are far too few employees, leading to long wait times and disgruntled consumers.

On top of all of this pharmacy business, we find the strange-but-true business practices of the Wal-Mart corporation as a whole.  Little nagging ideas such as being a responsible part of a local economy.

What makes Wal-Mart a necessary evil?

In Case of Technological Holocaust

Yesterday, our region experienced some high wind activity, and we were left without power at home.  Though my internet devices (modem, routers, wireless access point) are on a battery backup, the outage looked like it was going to last for a little while, so I shut those devices off.

What is up with this Hollywood?  You seriously should listen to Jim.  There has been a flood of terrible ideas and remakes of movies not more than 30 years old lately.  Do you really think I’m going to pay $10 for a ticket to go see Predator – Not A Sequel?

Way to rape the childhood of your core audience there, Hollywood:

Well, I guess they’ll never learn.  Also, fuck you IMDB for having stuff behind a pay wall on a site that essentially should just be a wiki.

Worthless Genius Stats

As a bit of an aside, today I’d like to talk about some stats that I’m pooling here on the site.  The stats are going to be for posts created on the old Stroz.net blog, but not including SPAM or page hits while it was running there. If you care, you can keep reading. Continue reading

Software Spotlight: RadicalCodex

RadicalCodex 1.0

RadicalCodex 1.0

There has been a lot of controversy lately about the viability of commercial, closed source applications running on Linux as a platform. The purists believe that all closed source applications are inherently evil, and should not be allowed to run on Linux, as it spoils the world of freedom. The other side of the coin are the people thinking about the future of Linux as a viable platform for even our grandparents to use.

I subscribe to the latter point of view. I’d like to point out one amazingly awesome piece of closed source commercial software for Linux.
