Sometimes it is difficult for one to live in the modern world with the myriad distractions and the constant barrage of information from every electronic device and online service. While some of this information is clearly superfluous to our occupations and the well-greased machine of our life, other nuggets of thought-provoking brain candy can enrich even the most mundane knowledge worker’s daily routine.
I do not mean to sound like a technological apologist, but the fact remains that in order to get through my daily work, I need to rely not only on my own bag of tricks, but also the Pandora’s box of the World Wide Web.
So, how am I dealing with this constant flood of nigh-impossible-to-organize knowledge distractions? Not very well up to this point, but the tide has been changing for the better in the recent weeks.
I’ve done quite a few Software Spotlight articles covering various applications that I use on a constant basis. And while each of these applications deserve the spotlight in their own respect, I have come to rely on a service more than others: Remember The Milk.
Remember The Milk is a simple cloud-based task management system that provides all the functionality needed to run a reliable GTD system without much extra overhead. What RTM lacks in fancy features, it makes up for with integration with many other services out there, like Google Calendar and Twitter.
So, why has RTM become such an integral part of my lifestyle?
Once again, it is that time. That time where I wait in line at the Wal-Mart pharmacy, only to find out that the prescription is not ready.
I’m not going to blame the Wal-Mart employees themselves, on the contrary, they work in an extremely flawed system. There are far too few employees, leading to long wait times and disgruntled consumers.
On top of all of this pharmacy business, we find the strange-but-true business practices of the Wal-Mart corporation as a whole. Little nagging ideas such as being a responsible part of a local economy.
What makes Wal-Mart a necessary evil?

Let me first say that I am indeed not the world’s greatest artist. I also have never done a web comic before, so just look past those facts at this point.
I was inspired to write this today after a visit to the Wal*Mart Pharmacy. I know that these people are busy and all, but there really isn’t much common courtesy between the employees and their customers.
Though the prescriptions only cost ~$4, the amount of time that you spend waiting for your prescription–judged solely on the amount of time that they quote you–makes the prescription astronomically expensive.
I know you guys are busy, and I know that your inexpensive prescriptions make you popular, but please, please stop telling people that their stuff will be ready in 30 minutes.
I have a few suggestions for Wal*Mart:
- Hire more pharmacy workers – You have two drive through lanes, each with computers, and you have two computers at the front desk. Yet, you have one person who has to attend to all of them?
- Start being realistic about your time quotations – If you’re extremely busy, I’d rather hear “Please come back in 2 hours” than “It will be ready in 30 minutes”, if the former is accurate. I could go home, do some work, go eat lunch, etc. Maybe this is some sort of internal marketing strategy to psychologically get people to buy stuff because they are stuck in the store for so long waiting for their prescription?
- If there is insurance on file, run it through first – Nothing gets me riled up more than waiting for the prescription, only to find out that I’ll have to wait again to not have to trade in my arm to get rid of a sinus infection. And for god’s sake, if there’s a problem with the insurance, tell me the first time I come for the prescription.
